2007-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

2007-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

Fits: 2007-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Three nuts per side, reached through an access panel in the rear side trim. The one step to read carefully is the wiring in Step 6.

Required Tools

  • Ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool

Tools needed to install LED tail lights on a Toyota FJ Cruiser

Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights

Step 1: Remove the Sill Plate

Open the rear door and use the screwdriver to take out the screws holding the trunk sill plate.

Step 1: remove the screws from the trunk sill plate

Step 2: Remove the Weather Seal and Side Panel

Pull the weather stripping back near the tail light, then gently pry the interior side access panel off with the trim tool.

Step 2: pull back the weather strippingStep 2: pry off the interior side access panel

Step 3: Remove the Mounting Nuts

Find the three 10mm nuts holding the tail light assembly and remove them with the socket.

Step 3: the three 10mm tail light mounting nuts

Step 4: Pull the Tail Light Out

From outside the car, pull the assembly firmly straight back to release it from the body.

Step 4: pull the factory tail light straight back

Step 5: Disconnect the Plugs

Twist out the bulb sockets or unplug the main harness connectors. If the new lamp does not include a reverse bulb, transfer the factory one over now.

Step 5: twist out the bulb sockets and disconnect the harness

Part 2: Install the New LED Tail Lights

Step 6: Wiring Connections

The new lights plug into the factory sockets, with one connection made by hand. On the US-spec FJ Cruiser the rear turn signal is in the tail lamp.

  • Remove the three factory bulbs and push the new light's sockets into the factory socket holders.
  • The white wire on the reverse plug matches the truck's red/yellow reverse wire. The truck's white/black wire is ground.
  • The yellow wire on the new light is the turn signal. Remove the turn-signal socket base from the back of the new light, keeping the yellow wire, and connect the yellow wire to the PINK wire on the factory turn-signal socket. Crimp or solder the joint and insulate it. A joint that is only twisted together can work loose and cause fast flashing.
  • The anti-hyperflash load for these tail lights is built in, so the tail lights themselves need no extra resistor.

Step 6: connect the new tail light harness to the factory plugs

Step 6: US-spec FJ Cruiser turn-signal wiring, yellow wire to the pink wire on the factory socket

Step 7: Fit and Secure

Line the new lamp up and push it into place, then refit the three 10mm nuts from inside.

Before any trim goes back on, switch the ignition on and test the running lights, brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights on both sides. Check that the turn signals are not hyperflashing.

Step 8: Reassemble the Trim

Refit the interior side panel, press the weather seal back into place, and screw the sill plate back down.

Common Issues and Solutions

Tail light does not turn on after installation. Check that the harness connectors are fully seated. Inspect the pins inside each connector; if any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small precision tool and reconnect securely.

Fast flashing (hyperflash). Check that the yellow wire is firmly joined to the pink wire on both sides and that the turn-signal socket base has been removed. If you replaced the factory flasher relay, put the original back. If the front turn signals have been changed to LED bulbs, the front circuit no longer draws enough load and will flash fast: add a separate 50W load resistor for the front turn signals, or go back to the factory front bulbs. The resistor gets hot, so mount it securely away from wiring and plastic parts. If your LED headlights came with resistor boxes, make sure both are plugged in.

Swap test. If a tail light still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light itself or the vehicle wiring.

Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
