2009-2024 Nissan GTR R35 LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

Fits: 2009-2024 Nissan GTR R35 - pre-facelift, facelift, NISMO and the 2024 Final Edition.

The tail lights sit behind the rear bumper on this car, so the bumper corner has to be released before a lamp will come out. Work on one side at a time and tape the paint edges first.

Required Tools

  • Ratchet with an extension bar
  • 8mm, 10mm and 12mm sockets
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Painter's tape (masking tape) to protect the paint
  • Clean microfiber towel to set parts on

Tools needed to install LED tail lights on a Nissan GTR R35

Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights

Step 1: Clear the Trunk Trim

Open the trunk and find the trim panel. Use a trim tool to pop out the four large clips and unscrew the single small knob by hand, then lift out the foam organizer tray to expose the chassis metal behind the lamps.

Step 1: remove the trunk trim clips and foam tray

Step 2: Remove the Mounting Nuts (Driver's Side)

There are five mounting points on this side. With an 8mm socket, remove the three nuts holding the tail light housing and the two nuts along the upper bumper edge.

Step 2: the five 8mm mounting nuts on the driver's side

Step 3: Repeat on the Passenger Side and Unplug

Do the same on the passenger side. With the nuts out, find the factory wiring harness running to the tail light and unplug the connector.

Step 3: unplug the factory tail light connector

Step 4: Loosen the Rear Diffuser

Go underneath the rear bumper and remove the 10mm and 12mm bolts holding the rear diffuser and undertray. This step is what lets the bumper flex later, so do not skip it.

Step 4: rear diffuser bolts under the bumperStep 4: remove the undertray fasteners

Step 5: Free the Bumper Corner

At the bumper corner inside the wheel well, remove the screw you can see, then peel the fender liner back to reach the hidden bolt holding the bumper to the fender. Both have to come out before the corner will move.

Step 6: Tilt the Bumper Corner

Tape the fender and bumper edges first so nothing marks the paint. Pull the bumper corner outward until it unsnaps, then ease it downward to open a gap wide enough for the lamp to slide out.

Step 6: tilt the bumper corner down to open a gap

Step 7: Slide the Factory Lamp Out

Work the factory tail light assembly out of its housing. Be gentle with the white bracket on the inside of the lamp: it has to clear the bumper edge before the light will come free. Set the factory lamp aside.

Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights

Step 8: Connect and Fit

Plug the new PrismBeam lamp into the factory harness, tidy the wiring, then slide the assembly into position and check that the rubber weather strip seals against the body all the way round.

Tip: tuck the resistor and the harness connectors deep into the body cavity. If they sit behind the lamp they will stop the new housing sitting flush.

Step 8: connect the new tail light to the factory harnessStep 8: seat the new lamp against the body seal

Step 9: Reassemble and Test

Push the bumper corners back until they click home, then refit everything in reverse order: wheel well, diffuser, trunk nuts, trim. Test the turn signals, brake lights and reverse lights on both sides before you drive.

Step 9: reassembled rear bumper with the new tail lights fitted

1. Remote control pairing. The remote comes pre-paired with the lamps and switches to Red Light Driving Mode (static red, no flowing animation) with one press. If the remote does not work, press the brake pedal and hold the remote button for 10 seconds to pair it again.

2. Animation control. The app controls the running-light animations. The startup animation is preset and cannot be changed.

3. Download the app. Search for "Star Light Running" in the App Store or Google Play, or scan the QR code on the controller box.

4. Bluetooth connection. Open the app, tap Add Device (Figure 2), open the interface (Figure 3), and select the nearby device.

5. Adjusting modes.

  • Dynamic mode: the number in the center of the blue box shows the current mode. Tap + or - to switch effects, or AUTO to cycle through all of them.
  • Static color: drag the color wheel in the green box, or tap a preset color. This stops any running animation.
  • Brightness: drag the slider in the first row of the red box.
  • Speed: drag the slider in the last row of the red box.

Tip: if you used the older "Light Running" app and have trouble connecting, use "Star Light Running", the upgraded version.

Only one side responds? The left and right lights sync through a signal wire. Check that the wire between them is plugged in securely.

Road use. Color modes are for show and display use where permitted. Confirm that the standard road-light functions work normally before using any color mode, and return the lights to Red Light Driving Mode for driving.

Common Issues and Solutions

Tail light does not turn on after installation. Check that the harness connectors are fully seated. Inspect the pins inside each connector; if any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small precision tool and reconnect securely.

Swap test. If a tail light still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light itself or the vehicle wiring.

App cannot connect. Turn on Bluetooth and Location Services on your phone (Android needs Location for Bluetooth scanning). The vehicle's running lights (parking lights) must be on to power the Bluetooth module. Keep other strong signal sources away from the vehicle.

Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
