Fits: 2009-2016 BMW Z4 (E89).
Three nuts and one plug per side, all reached through an access cover inside the trunk. Allow about half an hour and work one side at a time.
Required Tools
- Plastic trim removal tool
- 8mm socket and ratchet
- Microfiber towel

Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights
Step 1: Remove the Inner Access Cover
Open the trunk and take off the inner access cover behind the tail light.
Tip: use a plastic trim tool rather than a screwdriver. The clips on this cover snap easily and the panel scratches.

Step 2: Unplug the Wiring Harness
Disconnect the main harness connector.
Tip: press the center release tab firmly before pulling, and pull on the connector body, never the wires.

Step 3: Remove the Three 8mm Nuts
Undo the three 8mm retaining nuts holding the lamp.
Tip: keep a hand under the socket. A nut dropped here falls into the rear quarter panel cavity and is a job in itself to retrieve.

Step 4: Pull the Lamp Out
Draw the factory tail light assembly straight out of the body.
Tip: lay a microfiber towel over the bumper below the lamp first. The mounting studs will drag across the paint as the lamp comes out.

Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights
Step 5: Align and Insert the New Lamp
Line the new lamp up and push it into the body opening.
Tip: check that the foam sealing gasket already fitted to the new light is sitting flat against the body all the way round. A folded gasket is what lets water in later.

Step 6: Secure the Three Nuts
Refit the three 8mm nuts.
Tip: hand-tight plus about a quarter turn with the wrench is enough. Any more and you risk cracking the plastic housing.

Step 7: Connect and Test
Plug the harness back in, then test every function on both sides: running lights, brake lights, turn signals with the sequential sweep, and reverse lights. Only snap the interior cover back on once everything works.

Common Issues and Solutions
Tail light does not turn on after installation. Check that the harness connector is fully seated. Inspect the pins inside it; if any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small precision tool and reconnect securely.
Swap test. If a tail light still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light itself or the vehicle wiring.
Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
