Fits: 2015-2017 Ford F-150 and 2017-2020 Ford F-150 Raptor. The Raptor kept this headlight when the rest of the F-150 line moved to a different one for 2018, so the steps below are the same on both. Does not fit 2018-2020 F-150 other than the Raptor.
The headlight itself is held by three bolts, but you have to take the trim panel and the lower support bracket off first to reach them. Step 5 is the one that catches people out.
Required Tools
- Flathead screwdriver and plastic trim removal tool
- Ratchet and extension bar
- 7mm, 8mm and 10mm sockets
- Needle-nose pliers
Part 1: Remove the Trim and Bracket
Step 1: Remove the Top Plastic Clip
Open the hood and find the plastic clip on top of the headlight trim. Pop it out with a pry tool or flathead screwdriver.
Step 2: Remove the Wheel Well Screws
Inside the front wheel well liner there are two 7mm screws. Take both out.
Step 3: Detach the Headlight Trim Panel
Pull the trim panel gently to loosen it, then use the pry tool to release the locking tabs along its bottom edge.
Step 4: Remove the Lower Support Bracket Screws
With the trim off you can see the black plastic support bracket underneath. Remove the screws holding it, at the front and on the side. These are usually 10mm and 8mm.
Step 5: Release the Bracket Clip
Near the fender there is a square hole with two prongs inside it. Squeeze the prongs with needle-nose pliers while pulling, and the lower support bracket comes away. Trying to pull the bracket without releasing these will break it.
Part 2: Replace the Headlight
Step 6: Remove the Top Mounting Bolts
Remove the two 10mm bolts across the top of the headlight assembly.
Step 7: Remove the Inner Side Bolt
There is a third 10mm bolt recessed between the headlight and the grille. Use the extension bar on your ratchet to reach it.
Step 8: Remove the Headlight and Disconnect
Draw the old assembly straight out. Twist out the bulb sockets or unplug the main harness connector, depending on how your new light connects.
Step 9: Fit the New Headlight
Connect the truck's wiring harness to the new projector headlight, line up the locating pins, and push the assembly into place. The wiring diagram in the box gives a separate configuration for the factory-halogen F-150, the factory-LED F-150 and the Raptor — use the one that matches your truck, and the adapter the Raptor needs is already included.
Step 10: Test and Reassemble
Before the trim goes back on, switch the ignition on and check the DRL, low beam, high beam and turn signals on both sides. Then refit the bolts, the lower support bracket, the trim panel and the clips in the reverse order you removed them.
Common Issues and Solutions
Headlight does not turn on after installation. Check that the harness connectors are fully seated. Inspect the pins inside each connector; if any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small precision tool and reconnect securely.
Swap test. If a headlight still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light itself or the vehicle wiring.
Condensation inside the headlight. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
