Fits: 2002-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 / 2500 / 3500 (3rd generation, DR / DH / D1 / DC) with the Standard / Fleetside bed — all trims: ST, SLT, Laramie and Sport.
Does not fit Stepside / Flareside narrow bed models.
Pick the Right Variant — They Look Identical
There are two builds, and this is the part that catches people out:
- 2002-2006
- 2007-2008
The exterior is the same. Internally they are different — the mounting stud positions and the main connector are both different between them.
Before you remove both sides, take one factory lamp off and compare the back of the housing and the connector shape with the build you bought. Do not force an unmatched connector.
Before You Start
- Use masking tape near painted edges around the bed side and tailgate.
- Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.
- If a lamp does not move, stop and look for another fastener rather than forcing it.
Required Tools
- T15 Torx screwdriver — not a socket. The factory screws are Torx.
- A wrench for the battery terminal
- Masking tape and clean microfiber towels
- A helper for brake light and reverse light testing
Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
Switch the truck off and open the hood. Loosen the negative battery terminal and move the cable aside so it cannot fall back onto the post while you work. This is what prevents a short while the tail light wiring is disconnected.
Step 2: Remove the Two T15 Torx Screws
With the tailgate open, find the two mounting screws along the inner edge of the lamp and remove both completely with a T15 Torx driver. Keep them — the new lamp uses them.
Step 3: Pull It Straight Rearward
Hold the assembly with both hands and pull it slowly, straight toward the rear of the truck to release the outer locating pins and retaining clips.
Do not twist, rock or pry it sideways. That is what damages the mounting tabs, the locating pins and the paint.
Step 4: Disconnect
Support the lamp, press the locking tab, and separate the connector by the plug housing. Never pull on the wires — that damages the harness and the terminals.
Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights
Step 5: Inspect First
Before fitting, check the new lamp's housing, lens, mounting tabs, locating pins and connector for damage. Look inside the connector for bent terminals or foreign objects. Then compare both assemblies and confirm each one is going on the correct side.
Step 6: Test Before You Bolt It Down
Support the lamp safely, reconnect the negative battery terminal, and test:
- Parking / running lights on both sides.
- Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
- Left and right turn signals, hazards and the sequential sweep.
- Reverse lights, with the truck safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
- Confirm brightness, colour and behaviour are consistent on both sides.
Then switch the truck off again before securing the assembly.
Step 7: Secure and Finish
Seat the lamp on its locating pins, refit the two T15 screws without overtightening, and repeat on the other side. Close the tailgate slowly and confirm no wire is pinched.
Common Issues and Solutions
The connector will not go on. You most likely have the wrong year variant. Stop — do not force it. Compare the back of the factory lamp and the connector shape against the build you bought.
The lamp will not seat, or the studs do not line up. Same cause: the mounting stud positions differ between the 2002-2006 and 2007-2008 builds.
One lamp does not turn on. Recheck the main connector, the related fuse and the battery connection.
Swap test. If a lamp still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light or the truck's wiring.
Warning, flicker or hyperflash. Confirm any included decoder, resistor or harness adapter is installed as supplied for this product.
Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
