Read This First: Two Harnesses Are in the Box

The set contains the left and right lamps plus two adapter harness sets — one with a load resistor and one without. Which one your vehicle takes depends on how its body control module watches the rear lamps, and it differs by brand:

GMC Yukon and Yukon XL — use the set without a resistor.
Chevrolet Tahoe — use the set with the load resistor.
Chevrolet Suburban — fit the resistor set first, as on the Tahoe, and run the turn-signal test. If the signals behave abnormally, swap to the non-resistor set. Both are in the box, so this costs nothing but a few minutes.

Note this is the opposite way round from the 2007-2014 generation, where the Yukon takes the resistor and the Escalade does not. If you have done one of those trucks before, do not assume.

Before You Start

Park on level ground, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
Use masking tape near painted edges around the liftgate opening.
Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.
If a lamp does not move, stop and look for another fastener or locating pin.
Load resistors run warm. If you end up on the resistor set, mount it away from plastic trim, wiring insulation and water paths.

Required Tools

Trim removal tool
Metric socket and ratchet set
Phillips and flat screwdrivers
Masking tape and clean microfiber towels
Electrical tape and zip ties for the supplied harness
A helper for brake light and turn signal testing

Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

Locate the lamp retainers.

Step 2: Support the Lamp

Hold the lamp while removing its fasteners so it does not drop against the paint.

Step 3: Pull It Straight Out

Release the locating pins by pulling in line with the lamp. Do not lever against a painted panel.

Step 4: Disconnect

Press the lock tab and pull on the connector body, not on the wires.

Step 5: Compare Before Fitting

Set the old and new lamp side by side and check the rear plug and the mounting points before committing to the swap.

Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights

Step 6: Fit the Adapter Harness

Connect the harness you chose above to the vehicle connector, then to the lamp. Confirm the lock tab seats fully. Set the unused harness aside — keep it, in case the test below sends you back to it.

Step 7: Seat the Lamp Evenly

Align the locating pins and check the body gaps before tightening. Do not overtighten plastic mounting points.

Step 8: Test Before Closing Up

Running lights on both sides.
Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
Left and right turn signals and hazards. The turn signal flashes — it does not sweep.
Reverse lights where supported, with the vehicle safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
Startup animation, once the road-light functions pass.
Check for dashboard warnings, hyperflash or flicker.

If the signals behave abnormally, you are on the wrong harness set. Swap to the other one and retest.

Common Issues and Solutions

Hyperflash or a bulb-out warning. Wrong harness set. Swap to the other set from the box and retest — this is the single most common issue on this vehicle and it is a two-minute fix.

The turn signal flashes instead of sweeping. That is the product. There is no sequential sweep on this lamp.

One lamp does not light. Recheck the harness connection at both ends, the related fuse and the battery connection.

One function does not work. Verify the connector is fully seated.

The lamp will not sit flush. Check for a trapped harness and confirm every locating pin has seated.

Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
