2018-2026 Jeep Wrangler JL & JLU LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

2018-2026 Jeep Wrangler JL & JLU LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

Fits: 2018-2026 Jeep Wrangler JL (two-door) and Wrangler Unlimited JLU (four-door).

Does not fit the 2018 Wrangler JK. Both were built in 2018 and they use different lamps. If you are not sure which you have, look at the front: on the JL the headlight rings overlap the two outer grille slots, on the JK the grille slots run clear past the lamps.

No adapter harness is needed, and the lamps are a single piece. Bolts through the outer face of the body panel, one plug per side.

Before You Start

  • Park on level ground, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
  • Tape the painted edge around each lamp opening before removal.
  • If a lamp does not move, look for a remaining bolt or locating pin rather than forcing it.
  • Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.

Required Tools

  • Torx driver set
  • Trim removal tool
  • Clean microfiber towels and masking tape
  • A helper for brake, turn and reverse testing

Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights

Step 1: Remove the Lamp Fasteners

The JL tail lamp is held by bolts through the outer face of the body panel. Support the lamp as the last bolt comes out.

Step 2: Draw the Lamp Back

Pull the lamp straight back off its locating pins. Do not lever it against the paint.

Step 3: Disconnect the Wiring

Press the lock tab and pull on the connector body, not on the wires.

Step 4: Compare Before Fitting

Hold the new lamp against the original and check the plug position and mounting points match.

Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights

Step 5: Connect

Plug the new lamp into the factory connector and confirm the lock tab clicks home.

Step 6: Test Before Bolting Up

With the lamp still loose, run through every function:

  1. Running lights on both sides.
  2. Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
  3. Left and right sequential amber turn signals, and hazards.
  4. Reverse lights, with the vehicle safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
  5. Startup animation on ignition.
  6. Check for dashboard warnings, flicker or hyperflash.

Step 7: Seat and Secure

Line up the locating pins, check the body gap, then tighten evenly. Do not overtighten.

Step 8: Repeat and Finish

Do the same on the other side, then reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Common Issues and Solutions

Tail light does not turn on after installation. Recheck the connector lock, the related fuse and the battery connection. Inspect the pins inside the connector; if any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small precision tool and reconnect securely.

Hyperflash or a dash warning. Confirm both sides are wired the same way and every plug is fully seated.

Swap test. If a tail light still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light itself or the vehicle wiring.

Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
