Check Your Truck First
Which factory tail light your truck left the plant with decides how this set connects, and in one case whether it fits at all. Look at the back of your original lamp before you order or install.
- Factory halogen tail lights: fits. Connect the lamp plug straight to the body plug and install.
- Factory LED tail lights, no blind spot monitoring: fits. Unplug the two plugs marked 1 and 2 on the back of the new lamp before installing it.
- Any truck with BLIS (blind spot monitoring): does not fit. Do not install this set on a BLIS truck.
If the connector layout on your truck does not match either of the two supported cases, stop and check your truck's equipment before powering the lamp.
Before You Start
- Park on level ground, switch the truck off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
- Use clean towels or masking tape around painted panels and trim edges.
- Set the lamps face-down on a soft towel so the lens does not get scratched.
- Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.
- Leave the trim open until every lighting function has passed testing.
Required Tools
- Metric socket and ratchet set
- Trim removal tool or panel clip tool
- Phillips and flat screwdrivers
- Clean microfiber towels and masking tape
- Electrical tape and zip ties for the supplied harness
- A helper for brake light and turn signal testing
Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights
Step 1: Open the Rear Access
Lower the tailgate and take off only the access cover or trim you need to reach the lamp fasteners.
Step 2: Support the Lamp and Remove the Fasteners
Hold the lamp with one hand while you remove its nuts, bolts or clips, so it cannot swing against the bed side.
Step 3: Disconnect the Connector
Press the lock tab and pull on the connector body, never on the wires.
Step 4: Release the Lamp
Pull the lamp in line with its locating pins to release it. Do not pry against a painted panel.
Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights
Step 5: Compare the Two Lamps
Set the old and new lamp side by side and check the plug layout matches the case you identified at the top of this guide. If your truck has factory LED lamps without blind spot monitoring, unplug plugs 1 and 2 on the back of the new lamp now.
Step 6: Connect
Match the connector to the truck's plug and push until the lock tab clicks.
Step 7: Seat and Secure
Line up the locating pins and check the body gaps before tightening. Tighten the original retainers evenly and do not overtighten plastic mounts. Secure any slack wiring with zip ties, away from the latch, the weather seal and sharp sheet metal.
Step 8: Test Before the Trim Goes Back
- Running and parking lights on both sides.
- Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
- Left and right turn signals, hazards, and the sequential sweep.
- Reverse lights, with the truck safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
- Startup animation.
- Check for dashboard warnings, hyperflash or flicker.
With everything passing, refit the trim and close the tailgate slowly to confirm no wire is stretched or pinched.
Common Issues and Solutions
Tail light does not turn on after installation. Recheck the main connector and any side-specific extension wire. Inspect the pins inside each connector; if any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small precision tool and reconnect securely.
A function behaves wrongly, or a warning appears. Go back to the three cases at the top of this guide and confirm you connected for the right one, in particular whether plugs 1 and 2 should be unplugged on your truck.
Swap test. If a tail light still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light itself or the truck's wiring.
Trim will not sit flush. Check for a trapped harness, a misaligned clip or a folded weather seal.
Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
