Fits: 2005-2009 Ford Mustang (S197) — all models.
These steps cover both builds, Clear White and RGB. Removal and fitting are identical; the RGB build has an extra app setup section at the end.
There Is a Function Switch — Find It Before You Close the Trunk
These lamps have a function switch button on the harness that changes how the tail lights behave. You need it reachable while you test, and it is much harder to get to once the trim is back on.
To cycle the modes: with the running lights and hazards on, tap the function switch. It steps through:
- Red cursor
- Yellow cursor
- Red dynamic
- Yellow dynamic
- Red light without dynamic
- Yellow light without dynamic
To enter driving-dynamic selection: with the running light on, press and hold for more than five seconds until the lamp flashes.
Decide which mode you want before the final trim goes back — and check your local rules on which behaviour is legal for road use where you are.
Before You Start
- Park on level ground, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
- Use masking tape around the painted trunk lid and quarter-panel edges.
- Fold back liners or sound insulation carefully so the clips can be reused.
- Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.
- Leave the trunk trim open until every function has passed testing and you have set the switch mode.
Required Tools
- Trim removal tool or panel clip tool
- Metric socket and ratchet set
- Phillips and flat screwdrivers
- Masking tape and clean microfiber towels
- Electrical tape and zip ties for the supplied harnesses
- A helper for brake light and turn signal testing
Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights
Step 1: Open the Rear Access
Open the trunk and remove only the trim panels, access covers, cargo liners and clips you need to reach the lamp fasteners.
Step 2: Expose the Fasteners
Fold back the liners or sound insulation carefully so the clips survive for reassembly.
Step 3: Support and Unfasten
Hold the lamp with one hand while removing its nuts, bolts, screws, clips or bulb holders.
Step 4: Disconnect
Press each lock tab and pull on the connector body, not on the wires.
Step 5: Release the Locating Points
Pull the lamp in line with its locating pins or ball studs. Do not pry against a painted panel.
Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights
Step 6: Compare Before Fitting
Set the removed lamp beside its replacement. Transfer a bulb holder, seal, bracket, module or decorative piece only where the factory lamp clearly carries a part the new one does not.
Step 7: Connect
Match each supplied connector to the corresponding vehicle connector and confirm the lock tab clicks home. Identify the power plug and the function switch as you go.
Step 8: Route the Harnesses
Run extension wires and controller wires along the factory trim and grommet paths. Zip-tie so nothing can rub, pinch or pool water, and keep wiring clear of hinge travel, latch movement, weather seals and sharp edges.
Leave the function switch somewhere you can still reach it.
Step 9: Seat and Fasten
Align the locating pins, ball studs, clips and body gaps, then tighten the retainers evenly without overtightening plastic mounts.
Step 10: Test and Set the Mode
- Parking and running lights on both sides.
- Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
- Left and right turn signals, hazards and the sequential sweep.
- Reverse lights, with the car safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
- Startup animation, once the road-light functions pass.
- Set the function switch to the mode you want, using the cycle described at the top.
- Check for dashboard warnings, hyperflash or flicker.
Step 11: Reassemble
Refit the trim panels and close the trunk slowly, confirming no wire is stretched or pinched.
The Clear White build is now fully installed. The next section applies only to the RGB build.
RGB: Happy Lighting App Setup
- The Happy Lighting app controls the colors and animation modes of the light bar. The startup animation is preset and cannot be changed.
- Download: search for "Happy Lighting" in the App Store or Google Play, or scan the QR code on the controller box.
- Pairing: turn on Bluetooth on your phone. Open the app, tap the menu icon (arrow 1), and select your device from the list (arrow 2).
- Color: tap the Adjust tab (arrow 3) and use the color wheel (arrows 4 and 5) to choose a solid color.
- Dynamic modes: tap the Music or Mode tab (arrow 6) to choose an animation. Use slider 8 to adjust speed and slider 9 to adjust brightness.
Road use. Color modes are for show and display use where permitted. Confirm that the standard road-light functions work normally before using any color mode.
Common Issues and Solutions
The lights are in the wrong mode. That is the function switch, not a fault. Turn the running lights and hazards on and tap it to cycle.
The switch does not respond. The mode cycle only works with the running lights and hazards on. For driving-dynamic selection, hold it more than five seconds with the running light on, until the lamp flashes.
One lamp does not turn on. Recheck the main connector, the side's extension wire and any plug-in adapter.
Brake, reverse, running or turn behaves wrong. Stop and recheck the connector choice and wire routing before moving pins or changing wiring.
Warning, flicker or hyperflash. Confirm any included decoder, resistor or harness adapter is installed as supplied for this product.
Trim will not sit flush. Check for a trapped harness, a misaligned clip, a folded weather seal or a grommet out of position.
App cannot connect. Turn on Bluetooth and Location Services on your phone (Android needs Location for Bluetooth scanning). The car's parking lights must be on to power the Bluetooth module.
Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
