Fits: 2007-2011 Toyota Camry (XV40) sedan — LE and SE only.
Does not fit the Camry XLE, and does not fit the Camry Hybrid. Check your trim before ordering, not after the old lamps are out.
These steps cover all three styles — Twin L-Bar Smoked Red, Twin L-Bar Smoked White, and C-Blade Smoked Red. Removal and fitting are identical. Smoked White and Smoked Red change the unlit appearance only; both light red on the road.
This is a four-piece set. The XV40 splits its tail lamps between the quarter panel and the trunk lid, and all four lamps are in the box. Plan it as two separate sub-assemblies: the quarter-panel lamps are reached from inside the trunk, the trunk-lid lamps from the trunk-lid trim panel.
One more year check: 2007-2009 and 2010-2011 cars use different factory part numbers for the trunk-lid lamp. Confirm you are working with the right lamp before removal.
Before You Start
- Park on level ground, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
- Use masking tape near painted edges around the trunk opening and trunk lid.
- If a lamp or trim panel does not move, stop and look for another fastener or locating pin rather than forcing it. Have replacement plastic clips on hand.
- Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.
- Leave the access covers and trim loose until every function has passed testing.
Required Tools
- Trim removal tool or panel clip tool
- Metric socket and ratchet set
- Phillips and flat screwdrivers
- Masking tape and clean microfiber towels
- Replacement plastic clips
- Electrical tape and zip ties for the supplied harnesses
- A helper for brake light and reverse light testing
Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights
Step 1: Open the Rear Access
Open the trunk and remove the access cover or liner you need to reach the quarter-panel lamp retainers. The trunk-lid lamps are reached from the trunk-lid trim panel.
Step 2: Support and Unfasten
Hold each lamp while removing its nuts, bolts, screws or clips.
Step 3: Pull the Lamp Out
Release the locating pins by pulling in line with the lamp. Do not lever against a painted panel.
Step 4: Disconnect
Press the lock tab and pull on the connector body, not on the wires.
Step 5: Compare Before Fitting
Set the old and new lamp side by side and check the rear plug, the connector count and the mounting points. Transfer a seal, socket, bracket or module only where your kit and the car's configuration require it.
Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights
Step 6: Connect
Seat the vehicle connector fully into the new lamp's connector and confirm the lock tab clicks home. Where an adapter is supplied, connect through it rather than forcing a direct plug.
Step 7: Route the Link Harness
Run the link harness between the quarter-panel and trunk-lid lamps so it clears the trunk-lid hinge sweep. Open and close the lid fully, all the way, before you put any trim back — a harness that only binds at full travel will not show itself until later.
Keep harnesses, decoders and relays away from latch movement, exhaust heat, water paths and sharp edges.
Step 8: Seat and Fasten
Align the locating pins and check the body gaps before tightening. Do not overtighten plastic mounting points.
Step 9: Test Before the Trim Goes Back
- Running and parking lights on both sides.
- Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
- Left and right turn signals, hazards, and the sequential sweep — confirm it runs across the quarter-panel and trunk-lid lamp together, not just the quarter panel.
- Reverse lights, with the car safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
- Startup animation, once the road-light functions pass.
- Check for dashboard warnings, hyperflash or flicker.
Step 10: Reinstall the Trim
Refit the covers, liners and clips only after confirming no wire is pinched. Every lamp should sit flush with even body gaps and a properly seated seal.
Common Issues and Solutions
The sequence stops partway across the tail. That is the link harness between the quarter-panel and trunk-lid lamps. Check it at both ends.
One lamp does not turn on. Recheck the main connector lock, the related fuse and the battery connection.
One function is missing. Verify the connector is fully seated, and that the correct adapter is used where one is supplied.
Warning, flicker or hyperflash. Confirm any included decoder or LED flash relay is connected and secured.
The trunk-lid lamp does not sit right. Recheck the year split — 2007-2009 and 2010-2011 use different factory trunk-lid parts.
Trim will not sit flush. Check for a trapped harness, a broken or missing clip, or a locating pin that has not seated.
Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
