Fits: 2009-2012 Toyota RAV4 (OE 81561-42130 / 81551-42130).
These steps cover both builds, Smoked Red and Smoked RGB. Removal and fitting are identical; the RGB build has an extra app setup section at the end. (The RGB bar uses a white base so it can transmit the full colour spectrum — that is why it looks white when off.)
Read This First
This is a four-piece set and a longer job than most tail light swaps. You are replacing:
- Two outer cornering lamps in the body
- Two flat lamps on the liftgate
To reach them you will remove cargo trim, the liftgate trim, the liftgate handle, and the emblem trim panel. There is also a connecting wire to route through a rubber grommet, and the kit includes a program switch button you need to keep reachable while testing.
Before You Start
- Switch the vehicle off before unplugging any rear lamp connector, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
- Protect the hatch trim and the painted liftgate edges before prying any clip.
- Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets.
- Release clips at the marked positions rather than pulling from one corner. That is what cracks trim on this car.
- Leave all trim open until every function has passed testing.
Required Tools
- Ratchet with a 10 mm socket
- Pry tool / trim removal tool
- Zip ties
- Masking tape and clean microfiber towels
- A helper for brake light and reverse light testing
Part 1: Remove the Outer Cornering Lamps
Step 1: Side Trim
Start with the side trim next to the outer lamp. Release the clips at their positions rather than pulling from one corner.
Step 2: The Two 10 mm Lamp Screws
Remove the two fasteners holding the cornering light.
Step 3: Upper Trim Clip
Use the pry tool on the upper side-trim clip before forcing the lamp out.
Step 4: Lower Side-Trim Screw
Remove it with the 10 mm socket.
Step 5: Open the Cargo Floor Trim
Fold the trunk mat inward and remove the lower center cargo trim, releasing the bottom clips.
Step 6: Unplug the Lamp
Pry the cargo side trim open only enough to reach the cornering-light connector, then unplug by the connector body.
Step 7: Pull the Lamp Out
Pull the outer lamp straight rearward along its guide pins. The mounting area includes ball-joint style retainers, so do not lever it sideways.
Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side
Part 2: Remove the Liftgate Trim and Flat Lamps
Step 9: Upper Liftgate Trim — In Order
Remove the small center trim first, then the side pieces. Doing it in the other order fights the clips.
Step 10: Liftgate Handle Cover and Screws
Find the handle gap and pry the handle cover up carefully, then use a 10 mm socket to remove the two handle screws. Same on both sides.
Step 11: Liftgate Center Trim
Release its clips with the pry tool.
Step 12: Emblem Trim
Use a 10 mm socket to remove the four nuts holding the emblem trim panel.
Step 13: Flat-Light Nuts
Remove the three nuts holding the flat light and unplug the tail-light power connector.
Step 14: Pull It Straight Out
Pull the trim and flat light perpendicular to the liftgate to release the ball joints and clips. Do not twist the trim against the painted panel.
Step 15: Repeat on the Opposite Side
Part 3: Install the New Tail Lights
Step 16: Route the Connecting Wire First
Lift the cargo side trim and route the connecting wire. Pass it through the rubber grommet and secure it with zip ties. Doing this first saves taking a lamp back off.
Step 17: Feed the Harness and Program Switch Through
Feed the lamp harness connector and the program switch through the sheet-metal opening, then seat the rubber body plug back in the panel. Keep the program switch reachable until testing is done.
Step 18: Fit the Outer Cornering Lamp
Align it with the body and tighten the two 10 mm screws.
Step 19: Connect the Cornering Lamp
Connect the lamp harness to the vehicle harness, then connect the cornering-lamp extension wire. Same on both sides.
Step 20: Fit the Flat Liftgate Lamp
Align the ball studs and clips. Make sure the vehicle weather seal is not trapped or folded under the lamp — this is the most common cause of a water leak afterwards.
Step 21: Tighten and Connect
Tighten the three retainers without overtightening plastic mounts, then connect the flat-lamp harness to the vehicle harness and to the flat/cornering extension wire. Same on both sides.
Step 22: Refit the Emblem Trim
Align it with the sheet metal and the flat-light clips, then tighten the four nuts.
Part 4: Harness Check
Your kit ships with one of two flat-light harness versions. Match the one in your box to your vehicle connector before final assembly:
- Four-wire version: green driving, white reverse, black ground, blue fog light
- Three-wire version: white reverse, green driving, black ground
The other harnesses:
- Cornering-light harness: green driving, red brake, black ground, yellow turn signal
- Extension wire: brown signal, red brake, yellow turn signal
Use these labels for confirmation and function testing only. Do not cut or repin by guesswork. If a connector does not match, stop and contact support with photos.
Part 5: Test, Then Finish the Trim
- Reconnect power temporarily and test the parking / running light, brake light, turn signal, reverse light, hazards and startup animation.
- On the RGB build, confirm the controller powers on and the app responds before the trim goes back.
- Check that no wire is pinched by the liftgate trim, the cargo trim, the rubber grommet or the weather seal.
- Tidy the wiring, secure every loose harness section, then refit the cargo trim, liftgate handle, liftgate trim and cornering-light side trim.
- Close the liftgate slowly and confirm both lamps sit flush with even gaps.
The Smoked Red build is now fully installed. The next section applies only to the RGB build.
RGB: Happy Lighting App Setup
- The Happy Lighting app controls the colors and animation modes of the light bar. The startup animation is preset and cannot be changed.
- Download: search for "Happy Lighting" in the App Store or Google Play, or scan the QR code on the controller box.
- Pairing: turn on Bluetooth on your phone. Open the app, tap the menu icon (arrow 1), and select your device from the list (arrow 2).
- Color: tap the Adjust tab (arrow 3) and use the color wheel (arrows 4 and 5) to choose a solid color.
- Dynamic modes: tap the Music or Mode tab (arrow 6) to choose an animation. Use slider 8 to adjust speed and slider 9 to adjust brightness.
Road use. Color modes are for show and display use where permitted. Confirm that the standard road-light functions work normally before using any color mode.
Common Issues and Solutions
One lamp does not power on. Recheck the main harness connector and the extension wire for that side — on a four-piece set the extension is as likely as the main plug.
Reverse, brake or turn behaves wrong. Compare the installed connector against the wire labels in Part 4. Do not move pins unless support or a qualified installer confirms the correction.
Water gets in after the job. Check whether the weather seal was folded under the flat lamp in Step 20, and whether the grommet in Step 16 seated squarely.
Trim will not sit flush. Check for a trapped harness, a misaligned ball stud or a folded weather seal.
RGB or app does not respond. Confirm the controller has power and pairing is complete. Turn on Bluetooth and Location Services on your phone (Android needs Location for Bluetooth scanning).
Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
