1995-2004 Toyota Tacoma LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

Fits: 1995-2004 Toyota Tacoma (1st generation).

The wiring depends on your year:

1995-2000 — connect the supplied adapter harness first, then the new tail light.
2001-2004 — connect the tail light plug directly to the factory connector.

This is a short job: four screws per side, and they do not even come all the way out.

Before You Start

Park on level ground, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
Use masking tape near painted edges around the bed side.
Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets. On a truck this age it is tempting, but grease can cause connection problems and may affect warranty coverage.
If a lamp does not move, stop and look for another fastener rather than forcing it.

Part 1: Remove the Factory Tail Lights

Step 1: Loosen the Four Screws — Do Not Remove Them

Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the four screws holding the tail light. They do not need to come out — about halfway is enough to release the retaining clips. Leaving them in place stops them disappearing into the bed side.

Step 2: Pull the Lamp Out and Unplug It

Pull the assembly outward, press the locking tab on the main connector, gently rock it as you pull, and remove the factory lamp. On a truck this age the plug is often stiff with road grit — rock it, do not yank it.

Part 2: Install the New Tail Lights

Step 3: Check the Terminals, Then Connect

Inspect the vehicle terminals for corrosion first. On a 20-plus-year-old truck this is the most common cause of a light that does not work after a clean install. If the terminals are green or crusted, clean them before going further.

Then wire it for your year:

1995-2000: connect the supplied adapter harness, then the tail light.
2001-2004: connect the tail light plug straight to the factory connector.

Make sure the locking tab is fully engaged.

Step 4: Fit and Secure

Align the new lamp with its mounting position and hand-start all four screws in their holes before tightening any of them — that is what keeps the lamp from sitting crooked. Then tighten them securely.

Step 5: Test Every Function

Running and parking lights on both sides.
Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
Left and right turn signals, hazards, and the sequential sweep.
Reverse lights, with the truck safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
Startup animation, once the road-light functions pass.
Check for dashboard warnings, hyperflash or flicker.

Common Issues and Solutions

The lamp does not light on a 1995-2000 truck. The supplied adapter harness is missing or not seated. 2001-2004 trucks do not use it.

One lamp does not turn on. Recheck the main connector lock, the related fuse and the battery connection — and recheck the terminals for corrosion.

Swap test. If a lamp still does not work, swap the left and right units to find out whether the issue is the light or the truck's wiring.

One function does not work. Verify the connector is fully seated.

Warning, flicker or hyperflash. Confirm any included decoder, resistor or relay is connected and secured.

The lamp sits crooked. Back the screws off, hand-start all four, then tighten.

Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
