2021-2024 Toyota Sienna LED Tail Lights Installation Guide

Fits: 2021-2024 Toyota Sienna (4th generation, XL40).

This one is more involved than a typical tail light swap. The rear lighting is split between the body and the tailgate, the power harness has to be routed through the tailgate, and the SIENNA chrome badge gets moved onto the new part with adhesive. Read the whole guide before you start and set aside proper time.

Before You Start

Park on level ground, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal while handling wiring.
Use masking tape around the painted tailgate and quarter-panel edges.
Do not put dielectric or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets. The rubber sealant in Step 7 is a different thing — it seals the joint, it does not go on the contacts.
Leave the trim open until every function has passed testing.
If a lamp or panel does not move, stop and look for another fastener rather than forcing it.

Required Tools

Ratchet with 10 mm and 8 mm sockets
Trim removal tool
Isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth, for the badge
Rubber sealant
Zip ties
Masking tape and clean microfiber towels
A helper for brake light and turn signal testing

Part 1: Open the Rear Up

Step 1: Remove the Hatch Trim

Open the trunk and use a trim tool to pry off the left and right trim panels from the hatch.

Step 2: Remove the Tailgate Side Panel

Use a 10 mm socket to remove the four screws on the tailgate side trim panel, take the panel off, and take out the lower tail light.

Part 2: Remove the Factory Tail Light

Step 3: Unfasten the Lamp

Remove the two screws securing the tail light, plus the lower lamp screw, then pull the assembly rearward.

Step 4: Disconnect

Press each lock tab and pull on the connector body, not on the wires.

Part 3: Install the New Tail Light

Step 5: Route the Power Harness Through the Tailgate

Pass the power harness through the tailgate before you offer the new lamp up. Doing it afterwards means taking the lamp back off.

Step 6: Transfer the Lower Lamp Connector

Remove the lower lamp, disconnect its original connector, and plug that connector into the new light.

Step 7: Move the SIENNA Badge

Remove the SIENNA chrome badge from the factory part. Clean the area behind it with alcohol, fit the badge in place on the new part, and press it for a full minute. Adhesive needs that contact time to hold; a quick press is why badges lift later.

Step 8: Connect and Seal

Plug in the connector, then apply rubber sealant to make the connection water-tight. Route the flat-light harness as shown on the product page and secure it with zip ties so nothing can chafe or catch the tailgate travel.

Step 9: Test Before the Trim Goes Back

Running and parking lights on both sides.
Brake lights, with a helper on the pedal.
Left and right turn signals, hazards, and the sequential sweep — confirm it runs across the body and tailgate sections together.
Reverse lights, with the vehicle safely in reverse and the parking brake on.
Startup animation, once the road-light functions pass.
Check for dashboard warnings, hyperflash or flicker.

Step 10: Do the Other Side, Then Reassemble

Repeat every step on the opposite side, refit the hatch trim, then close the tailgate slowly and confirm no wire is stretched or pinched by the lid or the hinge travel.

Common Issues and Solutions

The sweep stops partway across. Check the harness between the body and tailgate sections, at both ends.

The lower lamp does not work. Its original connector from Step 6 is not plugged into the new light, or is not fully seated.

The badge lifts at an edge. The surface was not cleaned with alcohol, or it was not pressed long enough. Clean again and hold it a full minute.

Moisture appears at the connection. The rubber sealant from Step 8 was skipped or applied thinly.

One lamp does not turn on. Recheck the main connector, the side's harness, and the related fuse.

Trim will not sit flush. Check for a trapped harness, a misaligned clip, a folded weather seal, or a grommet that is not seated squarely.

Condensation inside the tail light. Temperature differences can cause light condensation, which is normal. Once the light has been on for a while and the internal temperature stabilizes, the moisture clears on its own. It does not affect brightness, performance, or lifespan.
